The lecture is designed to give a clear and practical understanding of how to measure blood pressure in anaesthetised animals and why it’s important. We’ll cover three main areas: how to measure blood pressure, what causes low blood pressure, and how to manage it effectively.
We look at different ways to measure blood pressure in animals. This includes direct methods like arterial catheterisation and indirect methods such as oscillometry and Doppler. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each method in real-world veterinary settings.
We’ll explore why animals might experience low blood pressure, also known as hypotension. Causes can range from low blood volume and heart problems to reactions to anaesthesia. Knowing these causes helps in diagnosing and planning treatments.
We’ll talk about how to treat hypotension including immediate actions like giving fluids and medications, as well as addressing the underlying causes. We’ll emphasise the importance of customised treatment plans based on the specific needs of the animal and the cause of the hypotension.
By the end of this lecture, you will have a solid understanding of blood pressure management in veterinary patients, helping them to improve animal care and outcomes.
